What is Physio-led Pilates?
Small group Physio-Led Pilates tailored to your personal needs, following a full Physiotherapy assessment by an experienced Physiotherapist.
Research consistently shows that the most effective way of managing most musculoskeletal and degenerative conditions includes exercise. Exercise is known to be very important for maintaining physical and mental health throughout life.
Physiotherapy takes a “whole person” approach to health and wellbeing. It helps to maintain health, helping clients to manage pain, prevent further injury, facilitate recovery and continue to do the activities that are important to them.
Pilates is a structured and progressive system of exercise which emphasises efficient and controlled movements whilst maintaining good control of core and other postural muscles. It incorporates appropriate flexibility and breath control. Pilates can improve posture, strength, flexibility and balance. It is suitable for any age and can be adapted to all levels of fitness.
I use a modified form of Pilates developed by the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). It is a movement re-education method where classical Pilates exercises are further broken down and modified for the rehabilitation setting. Clinical reasoning underpins the exercise selection, aiming to achieve mental awareness of achieving a successful, positive movement, free of pain and relevant to the load of the task. To this I bring many years of experience as a hands on Physiotherapist.
Who is Physio-Led Pilates for?
Physio-Led Pilates will be helpful for those with long term aches and pains, arthritis, niggling or recurrent injuries, osteoporosis, back pain or those who have not exercised for a long time and would like to begin in a safe and supportive environment.
About Me
I am a Chartered Physiotherapist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. I graduated with honours in Physiotherapy in 1994. In 2005 I completed a Masters degree from Manchester University in Manual Therapy (Assessment and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions).
Over the years I have treated patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions in primary and secondary care and via self-referral. I have worked in a spinal orthopaedic clinic, hospital departments, a pain clinic, GP surgeries, health centres, patients’ homes and in private practice. Throughout my career I have kept up to date and developed my skills including the ability to set goals and problem solve in a collaborative way with clients.
For several years I have been practising and enjoying Pilates. From my experience as a physiotherapist, I could see its application as a tool for health and rehabilitation. I have also seen how exercising together adds to the support, motivation and enjoyment of exercise. So I decided to take additional training in Pilates from the APPI which is an internationally respected training body for Physiotherapists.
